With 2019 just around the corner, I figured it was time to get on the yearly bandwagon of the Instagram #BestNine collage and see what turned up. I am just one of over 1-billion monthly active users who enjoy the social platform daily. It’s simple to navigate, image-focused, and has been a great networking tool over the years. Although I don’t push my IG presence aggressively, I’m proud to say that my feed is 100% genuine - from my curated style of alternating B&W with colour images each week, live streams during photoshoots, daily #instastory posts, to the real-people interaction/follower count. In this day and age with social media, it’s sometimes hard to discern what is truly real vs a staged reality. As with my feed, you’re certain to know that each image has a bit of both and that magic moment in between when it all comes together!
So these are my most liked images of the year and to my surprise, these 9 images are from only 5 photoshoots. The most popular shoot is that of the big haired and glamorous Shae, with a beauty set (top right x1 and bottom row right x2) that truly is one of my favourites of all time. The second most popular images are tied between two shoots showcasing vibrant colours. The first is a latex clothing brand shoot with Dee using gelled strobes and the second is a fashion creative with Chantal in front of a bright pink background. The other two best-of spots were taken of these male-model fresh faces, Chris and Adam. For Chris’ moody (b&w) shot, I was inspired by Peter Lindbergh’s portrait work using what I call a “black box” or as others refer to it a ”sunbounce cage” and shot entirely with natural light. Adam’s rustic shot of him leaning against the wall was taken behind one of my favourite century-old buildings near my studio in Riverside. Not really sure why this particular shot made it in the top 9, but I’m glad that it resonated well with many.
If there’s a sincere takeaway from doing the #BestNine collage each year and reviewing people’s top picks, it would simply be this: Never doubt your creative instincts for if you believe it, create it!
